Diapers are as basic a need as food and shelter for babies’ overall health and well-being, yet one in five Canadian families still struggle to afford them.

On December 1, 2023, WaterWerks Agency launched their 14th Annual Diaper Drop, a program that raises and collects diaper donations for families in Newfoundland and Labrador who are struggling to afford this basic need for their babies.

The Annual Diaper Drop was first conceptualized in 2009 when the team learned of the grim reality that one in five Canadian parents will often have to cut back on essentials like food, utilities, medicine and child care, in order to afford buying diapers.

The situation is even bleaker for the tens of thousands of parents in the province who are faced with this dilemma. Newfoundland and Labrador’s poverty rate tracks higher than the national average, which means that for the 15% of families already living in poverty, their situation could only worsen with the ever-rising costs of living today.

Since its launch fourteen years ago, the Diaper Drop program has raised and distributed over 600,000 diapers to parents for their babies throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The WaterWerks team hopes and believes that with the help of the community, this season’s drive will help raise tens of thousands more.

It’s not the first thing that crosses your mind when you think about what to donate during the Christmas season, or at any other time of the year. But it’s such a basic need, and it’s hard to believe that such a basic need is not being met.

There are ways you can help put an end to Diaper Need:

All donations will be handed over to our longstanding partner, the Community Food Sharing Association, who will ensure that these diapers make their way to families in Newfoundland and Labrador who need them the most.

This Christmas, join us in helping put an end to Diaper Need.
